Plymouth’s Independent Craft Brewery & Taproom
Step into Steel Brew, the heart and soul of the Royal William Yard. More than a brewery, our tap room is the “stadium” for our craft beer and the ultimate home for live music in the South West.
Here, every pint is brewed on site, just steps away from the stage where the region’s best bands keep the Steel Brew faithful on their feet. If you’re looking for “main character energy” in your night out, you’ve found the spot.

The Art of the Brew
At the core of our operation is a brewing process defined by an unwavering commitment to quality and traditional artistry. Our brewer selects premium malts and hops to craft brews that offer a high-quality experience in every glass. But we don’t just brew for ourselves, we brew for the community.
Our taproom serves as a vital gathering place where friends meet, laughs are shared at our Comedy Nights, and the best sounds of the South West come to life. Supporting local isn’t just a slogan here – it’s how we keep thriving and ensure our part in the local economy remains sustainable and impactful.
From Garage to Greatness
Every legend has a beginning. Ours started in a home garage in 2018, where we first perfected the recipes for brews like Mantra and Black & Tan. By 2019, we were picking up awards for Firestone and Plymouth, and we knew we needed a bigger stage. In 2021, we officially moved into our current home in the Mills Bakery. After a fresh start under new ownership in 2022, we’ve evolved into the unlimited entertainment hub you see today – a place where history is made every weekend.

Our Historic Home
We don’t just have a taproom, we have a masterpiece. Our home is the iconic Royal William Yard, a former naval victualling yard designed by the legendary Sir John Rennie between 1826 and 1835. We are housed within the Grade I listed Mills Bakery, surrounded by the largest collection of historic military buildings in Europe. It’s a backdrop that’s as epic as our setlists, blending Plymouth’s maritime past with the pulse of the modern craft beer movement.
Being part of this thriving cultural hub not only offers a distinctive atmosphere for our visitors but also fuels our creativity, intertwining the spirit of Plymouth’s past with the contemporary craft beer movement. Our location ensures visitors can easily find us and immerse themselves in both our brewing process and the Yard’s incredible charm, a place where history comes alive with modern vibrancy.
